City of Birmingham
will head to the final Division Four weekend of the season at Crowborough on 10/11 November with a three-point lead over nearest rivals Croydon Amphibians and Ealing.

Ealing’s hopes of automatic promotion took a dive when they crashed 16-12 to a Croydon side revitalised by the experience of ex-international Ivan Drinkwater. Three minutes into the third period, Ealing led 10-7 but they then ran into disciplinary problems and ended up beginning the final period with a 12-10 deficit.

Nat Snook (5), Drinkwater (3), Brennan Heath (3) and Jack Sheppard (2) were the main Croydon scorers.

Croydon completed a high-scoring hat-trick of victories, beating Basingstoke 23-5 (eight goals for Drinkwater) and University of Bristol 26-11 (Drinkwater seven, Heath six, Kevin Steele five).

There were no mistakes from Birmingham, who narrowly missed out on promotion last season. They beat Basingstoke 18-10, Weymouth & Portland 11-7 and Bristol University 22-12.

New boys Weymouth & Portland enjoyed easily their best weekend so far, defeating Newcastle 12-5 and Cambridge 11-10.

Basingstoke were relieved to collect their first victory – 14-9 against Newcastle. The game was all square at 7-7 at the start of the last quarter but the gallant return of Adam Hilliard following a nasty eye injury helped put them on top. Adams (4), Hilliard (3) and Williams (3) were key scorers for Basingstoke.
