Newton Abbot will be the team to beat in Division Three this season after opening their campaign with a feast of goals at Ponds Forge, Sheffield.

Simon Heggarty claimed six in the 18-13 defeat of Otter 1969. Then it was the turn of the Margetts brothers to make Reading suffer. Steve scored nine and Andy seven to secure a 22-10 success. Rob Toolen notched five for Reading.

The Devon side were the only team to win their opening games at Ponds Forge.

Experienced Steve Lethwood scored six in each of Invicta Marlins’ two games. They edged out Warley 10-9 thanks to a goal two minutes from the end by Matt Spurr but then went down 15-12 to Caledonia, for whom McGregor and Fraser both netted four.

South Derbyshire’s 11-8 victory over Caledonia featured five goals by Bird.

The next Division Three weekend is at Nottingham University on 22/23 September.
