PORTOBELLO’S NWPL GREEN LIGHT

Portobello have been cleared to continue playing in the National League’s top division during the coming season following an Amateur Swimming Association disciplinary appeal hearing in Birmingham on 14 July.

The case centred on an allegation that Portobello included a player in an NWPL fixture early in the 2006 season who was then serving an ASA ban. The player’s suspension related to an incident in the British Championships of 2005.

The Portobello club were originally suspended from playing matches in England for one year from 1 January 2007. The suspension was lifted pending the 14 July appeal hearing – which instead imposed a reprimand and fine.

This means the NWPL Division One programme will go ahead as currently detailed both on the website and in the league handbook. GB Juniors join the competition in the second half of the season, playing matches against the top five clubs.
